ST. KEVIN'S PARK

Dartry, Dublin

A new house is constructed in the side garden of a Victorian house in Dartry, taking the alignment of the street frontage from the adjoining semi-detached houses.  The material palette of redbrick walls, granite cills, terracotta tiled roof and white painted timber windows is drawn from the neighbouring houses.

The form of the new house is compact and responds to climate and context.  Deep recesses are made in the south-west side elevation to provide shelter from the high summer sun while offering privacy to the interior.  The house is organized around a double-height dining space that also accommodates the staircase and a fireplace.  A suite of well-proportioned rooms are arranged around this central space on two levels, taking advantage of their orientation and relationship to the garden on three sides of the house. Internally, there is a palette of red brick, oak, terrazzo, and white-painted walls and ceilings with exposed joists.  The limited palette creates a calm atmosphere.
