The site forms part of Farrenboley Park, a series of semi-detached cottages laid out in a horseshoe shape which appears as a low density area on the Ordinance Survey Map from 1937. In recent years, however, there has been considerable in-filling of side gardens to these cottages.
The layout of the cottages is kept more or less as existing, with four rooms facing the street. The extension is then designed to open out to the rear garden and to maximise the daylight entering these rooms. A clear articulation is made between the original cottages and the new extension, while at the same time using the same external finishes in order to harmonise with the context. The rear elevation of the proposed house would be a combination of render, red brick and timber windows in keeping with the cottages.
The soft landscaping of the garden continues through the house with the insertion of a planted courtyard between the hallway and the dining room, which draws light into the relatively deep plan. It is proposed to construct a garden shed to the north boundary and a small covered seating area to the rear of the garden that will enjoy the west light in the evenings.
