A two-storey extension is attached to the side of the existing 1867 garden return, creating an interlocking of the house and the garden.  At the lower level the playroom is protected from the garden by the stair and turns inwards to the new stone patio.  The one-legged structure allows the corner to slide open to the south.  The stone surface continues under the existing house, making a continuous space that contains open and enclosed functions.

At the upper level the extension twists around on itself following the existing splayed plan form of the main house, closing off the view to the neighbours’ gardens and opening up to the rear garden.  The new two-storey extension is finished in natural render in keeping with the treatment of the existing house, and all windows and opening vents are of European oak.
