FORM
The form respects the existing morphology of the street, seeking to make a solid end to the terrace. This solid form is then carved away in places to make an entrance, to allow light to enter unexpectedly and to create a private terrace at roof level. The form projects beyond the adjacent facades to the rear, taking its building line from the library and houses further up the street. In this way the sense of the building as an end piece is heightened.
TIME
The project seeks to work with the element of time, endeavouring to be anticipatory and open to unpredictable uses rather than being nostalgic and freezing the temporal potential. A kind of emptiness is actively sought, making background rather than building-as-object, a robust stage set for an unknown play.
ROOMS
The Georgian plans are studied, plans composed of well-proportioned rooms that have adapted to unpredicted uses. The project works with rooms with a similar generosity in plan and section. Their emptiness is seen as an opportunity, encouraging both individual and collective imagination to fulfil the promise of the place.
USE
The building seeks to be appropriated by different programmes and to be capable of changing these uses over time. The connections to No.15 and the independent access to the upper floors make varied activities and configurations possible.
