Cherrington Road, Shankill, Dublin

Commended - RIAI Architecture Awards 2017

This is a house for two clients who love cooking. They asked for a design that would accommodate this passion, creating space both indoors and outdoors for the enjoyment of the preparation and consumption of food.

The strategy opens up the ground floor so that one can move freely through the living, dining and kitchen areas. The house was extended with the form turning to orientate views down the south-facing garden. This room is defined by two board-marked concrete beams, one internal and one external. Between the beams, a folding screen of iroko sliding windows mediates the internal cooking/dining space and the external cooking/dining space.

Two roof-lights bring light down at the junction of the extension and the existing house. The continuous floor surface of white terrazzo also bounces light deep into the plan. The washed concrete terrace is partially sheltered by the overhanging roof, allowing the indoor activity to move outdoors. The external concrete beam is deliberately over-sized to create a down-stand that holds and defines this outdoor covered space and protects the interior from the high summer sun.
