Sandymount, Dublin
The conditions imposed for exemption from planning permission are the starting point for this extension to a Victorian house. The project seeks to make the best use of the allowable area by forming a sequence of outdoor and indoor rooms and stretching the plan down the narrow garden. A new kitchen and dining room are added in the single-storey extension that connects to the original return. A small courtyard is formed on the boundary to bring south light into the kitchen. A brick fireplace forms the centre-piece of the new construction and supports a roof structure of glulam beams.
