Clontarf, Dublin

This project reconfigures and extends a semi-detached house in Clontarf for a young family. A series of similarly proportioned, interior and exterior rooms, openly connected are organised around a courtyard and a pear tree. The rooms are then given definition through stepped thresholds, ceiling variations, sliding and pivoting doors and material finishes.

The form responds to the contextual and climatic environment; the pitched roof ties into the existing hipped profile; a new bedroom perches above the south facing terrace to create a covered veranda; the courtyard brings east light and air into the surrounding spaces while a skylight pulls west light into the kitchen/dining area.

Externally a rich palette of pebbledash, cement render, sandblasted concrete, iroko window frames and concrete roof tiles is tested. Internally the finishes are minimal, refined to natural oak, exposed blockwork and white paint.
